What is PPSU, and is it safer than ordinary plastic in baby cups?

A BPA-free label still does not tell you what a baby cup is made of, or how it will behave under heat and repeated use. We looked at PPSU — its strengths, its limits, and how it compares with other materials, without the simplifying marketing promises.

Baby cup packaging is full of phrases like “BPA-free”, “premium plastic” or “non-toxic material”. They sound reassuring, but they may not tell a parent the things that matter most: what the product is actually made of, what use it was tested for, and how long it will stay in good condition.

PPSU is used in feeding bottles and training cups mainly for its high heat resistance, toughness and good stability under repeated washing. But does that automatically make every PPSU product “the safest”, and every other plastic dangerous? No. Materials deserve a more precise assessment.

What does “ordinary plastic” actually mean?

The word plastic does not describe one material. A baby cup may be made of polypropylene (PP), polycarbonate (PC), a copolyester sold under the trade name Tritan, PPSU, or a combination of several polymers.

These materials differ in:

  • chemical composition,
  • heat resistance,
  • toughness and resistance to cracking,
  • how easily they scratch,
  • the recommended cleaning method,
  • migration behaviour in contact with food.

So the claim “PPSU is better than plastic” is not technically accurate — PPSU is a plastic too. The useful question is: how does PPSU differ from a specific material, such as PP or polycarbonate?

Is a BPA-free label enough?

A BPA-free label speaks about one substance only: bisphenol A. It says nothing about the full composition of the product, its quality, its migration testing, or whether it can be boiled or steam-sterilised.

At the same time, a BPA-free label does not make a product suspicious. In the European Union, plastic materials intended for food contact must meet rules that include migration limits. When buying, clear identification of the material, the declared use, a trustworthy manufacturer and documentation of compliance matter more than a single marketing symbol.

What is PPSU?

PPSU stands for polyphenylsulfone. It is a high-performance thermoplastic from the polyarylsulfone family. It is used where resistance to heat, impact and repeated cleaning must come together — for example in certain medical components, technical parts and food-contact products.

In baby products, PPSU is used mainly for the bodies of feeding bottles and cups. The material has a naturally translucent amber to honey tone. That colour is not proof of authenticity in itself, because another plastic can be tinted to look similar.

Why PPSU is used for baby cups

High heat resistance

PPSU handles higher temperatures than many everyday consumer plastics. That is useful in a product washed, boiled or sterilised over and over. The permitted cleaning method, however, is always set by the manufacturer of the whole product, not by the material alone.

A cup is not made only of PPSU. The lid, thread, handles, valve or straw may be PP or silicone, with different heat tolerance.

Toughness and impact resistance

PPSU is rigid yet tough. In everyday drops it cracks less readily than more brittle materials. That is practical with a toddler who regularly sweeps the cup off the table.

Longer service life

A more durable body can survive more washing and sterilising cycles. Lifespan also depends on the design of the product, the detergent used, UV sterilising, mechanical damage and general care.

Low weight

PPSU is markedly lighter than glass or stainless steel. A small child can therefore hold the cup more easily, while the parent can still see the liquid level.

What do we know about migration from PPSU?

For any food-contact material, the question is whether — and how much — its components can transfer into the drink. European rules therefore work with overall and specific migration limits and with defined test conditions.

A peer-reviewed study from 2018 analysed five types of PPSU feeding bottles and the corresponding raw materials. The researchers assessed monomers, oligomers, residual solvents and migration into a food simulant under EU rules. In the samples tested they found no exceedance of the relevant migration limits or thresholds of toxicological concern, and on that basis identified no concerns about migration of PPSU-related substances.

That is a good result, but it deserves an honest reading:

  • it does not mean absolutely nothing migrates from every product,
  • it does not automatically cover every brand and every formulation,
  • it does not replace the documentation for a specific product,
  • it does not guarantee the safety of a damaged or misused cup.

Does PPSU contain BPS? An important clarification

Marketing often claims that PPSU “contains no bisphenols at all”. That absolute claim is problematic. The chemical structure of PPSU is related to the monomer bisphenol S (BPS). In the study cited above, however, free BPS was not detected in the PPSU samples above an analytical limit of 0.3 mg/kg of polymer, and migration testing showed no exceedance of the relevant limits.

A more accurate way to put it:

A well-made PPSU product can have a very good migration profile, even under the conditions used to test baby bottles. Without documentation from the specific manufacturer, though, absolute claims such as “free of all bisphenols” or “zero migration” are not appropriate.

This clarification does not diminish the practical advantages of PPSU. It only makes them more credible.

PPSU versus the other materials in more detail

PPSU vs polypropylene (PP)

PP is widespread, light and affordable. Used correctly it can be a perfectly sensible choice for a baby cup. PPSU usually has the advantage in heat and mechanical resistance, which suits a product meant for frequent repeated cleaning.

If you do not need to sterilise the cup and you inspect it regularly, good-quality PP is not automatically “bad”. The difference lies mainly in expected lifespan and tolerance of harder use.

PPSU vs Tritan

Tritan is a trade name for a family of clear copolyesters. It is light, durable and looks like glass. Properties and permitted temperatures can vary by formulation and product, so the material name alone is not enough — check the instructions for the specific cup.

PPSU is usually chosen when repeated exposure to higher temperatures is the priority. Tritan may appeal to parents who want a completely clear, light body.

PPSU vs silicone

Food-grade silicone is soft, flexible and handles heat well. It suits straws, spouts, valves and training cups. A soft body, however, squeezes when gripped and can take on the smell or colour of some foods.

PPSU provides a rigid, light container; silicone suits the soft parts that touch the mouth. That is why the two are so often used together.

PPSU vs glass

Glass is very inert and absorbs no odours. Residue and scratches show up easily. It is heavier, though, and it can break. A protective sleeve reduces the risk without removing it.

PPSU is more practical for a toddler drinking independently and for travel. Glass may suit feeding, when an adult holds the container.

PPSU vs stainless steel

Stainless steel is strong, durable, and in a double-walled version it can hold the temperature of a drink. The drawbacks are the extra weight and not being able to check the level from outside.

PPSU works well as a first light cup. Steel can be an excellent next step for an older toddler and longer outings.

With a straw cup, the body is not the whole story

Even when the body is PPSU, your child drinks through several other components. So look at the material of:

  • the straw or spout,
  • the inner straw extension,
  • the weight,
  • the valve and seal,
  • the lid, thread and handles.

The soft part in the mouth is usually food-grade silicone. The lid and handles may be PP. That is a normal, functional combination — but it means the instructions for the body cannot simply be applied to every part.

How to read the labelling on a baby cup

Look for the specific material

Prefer a product that names PPSU, PP, silicone or stainless steel for each part. “Premium plastic” with no further detail carries little information.

Check that it is intended for food contact

On the European market, look for the manufacturer or importer, instructions for use, age warnings, and the relevant food-contact marking where the purpose of the product is not obvious.

Read the temperature and cleaning instructions

Distinguish between dishwasher use, boiling, steam sterilising, UV sterilising and microwave heating. Permission for one does not imply permission for all.

Be wary of absolute slogans

Phrases such as “100% non-toxic”, “chemical-free”, “zero migration” or “the safest material” need concrete backing. Every material is a chemical substance, and safety depends on composition, dose, migration and how the product is used.

Colour is not a certificate

PPSU tends to be amber, but a similar tone can be created with colourant in another plastic. What counts is the material specification and a trustworthy source.

How to extend the life of a PPSU cup

  1. Take the cup fully apart after every use.
  2. Wash milk and other nutritious drinks off as soon as possible.
  3. Use a soft sponge or a brush that will not needlessly scratch the surface.
  4. Clean the inside of the straw with a suitable thin brush.
  5. Never pierce the fine air valves with a sharp object.
  6. Let every part dry completely and separately.
  7. Sterilise only by the method and at the temperature the manufacturer permits.
  8. Avoid harsh abrasive cleaners.

Greater durability does not mean indestructible. Proper care protects both the material and the hygiene of the cup.

When should the cup or its parts be replaced?

Replace the body or a component if you notice:

  • a crack or deformation,
  • deep scratches or a roughened surface,
  • a damaged thread or unreliable closing,
  • a straw torn by teeth,
  • sticky or permanently altered silicone,
  • stains or a smell that will not come out,
  • a damaged valve causing leaks or the wrong flow.

There is no single universal replacement interval for every cup. What matters is the actual condition, how heavily it is used, and the manufacturer's instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Is PPSU completely free of chemicals?

No. That claim would make no chemical sense — PPSU is itself a chemical material. What matters is whether the finished product meets food-contact rules and migration limits for its intended use.

Is PPSU BPA-free?

PPSU is not a polycarbonate made from BPA, and quality baby products are routinely declared BPA-free. Broader claims about all bisphenols, however, require knowledge of the specific formulation and analytical evidence.

Can PPSU be boiled or steam-sterilised?

PPSU itself has high heat resistance, but follow the instructions for your specific cup. The lid, handles and other parts may be made of materials with a lower permitted temperature.

Is PPSU safer than PP?

PPSU generally has higher heat and mechanical resistance, which helps with frequent sterilising and long use. A quality PP product used as instructed is not automatically unsafe.

Is PPSU better than glass?

It depends on the use. Glass is inert and easy to inspect, but heavier and breakable. PPSU is lighter and more drop-resistant, which usually makes it more practical for independent drinking.

Does an amber colour prove it is PPSU?

No. It is typical of PPSU, but the colour can be imitated. Check the manufacturer's material specification.

Is the higher price of PPSU worth it?

If the cup is used daily, washed or sterilised often, and replacement parts are available, longer life can offset the higher price. For occasional use, a good PP, silicone or other suitable cup may be enough.

Conclusion: PPSU is a durable choice, not a magic material

PPSU offers a genuinely useful combination of low weight, toughness, translucency and resistance to higher temperatures. A migration study of PPSU feeding bottles produced favourable results and identified no exceedance of the limits assessed.

There is no need, however, to claim that every other plastic is dangerous, or that PPSU has “zero migration”. A more trustworthy choice rests on precise material specification, compliance with food-contact rules, correct use and regular checks for wear.
